What You Can Expect

We know that the scale of the cost of living crisis in London can make jobs like these very rewarding, but very hard. So many people are struggling, and being in a support role can be very draining, when you’re seeing the challenges people are going through, when the queue of people who need help seems never ending and when you and your community are facing many of the same challenges as our clients.

As we develop our new team, we’re thinking very carefully about the support we put in place for our staff as well as our clients.

We want these roles to be fulfilling without being overwhelming, and we want to invest in our staff’s development and learning whilst they work.

What you can expect if you join our team:

Great managers: We know that your relationship with your manager is one of the most important things in a job. All our managers will perform to the same high standards – regular one-to-ones with staff; adopting a coaching style where we celebrate success and build on staff strengths; and lots of learning and development opportunities.

Peer support: As support workers, it’s hard not to carry your client’s stresses into your evenings and weekends. We’ll make space for peer support sessions, so you can reflect, support and offload with your colleagues, clearing your head before your free time.

Direct contact with our communities: This isn’t work that can be done completely behind a screen or over the phone. Our team will regularly work from community locations, or at outreach events so you can build real relationships with our partners and our clients.

Celebrating our impact and success: We’ll help you track your outcomes, so you can look back and see the numbers of people you and your colleagues have helped, the financial and wellbeing impacts you’ve had, and track the compliments and thank yous that make this work worthwhile.

Shaping a new service: We don’t just want you to do your case work, we also want all our staff to be involved in shaping how we grow and evolve our work. We’re interested in everyone’s ideas – for changes we can make, partners we might work with, campaigns we might run. We can’t promise to do everything, but we do always want to hear from everyone.

Learning and development: We are a multi-disciplinary team and there will be lots of opportunities to work with others from different professional backgrounds, as well as access to formal professional development opportunities in the team.

Diversity & Inclusion

We want Camden Council to be a great place to work and to ensure that our communities are represented across our workforce. A vital part of this is ensuring we are a truly inclusive organisation that encourages diversity in all respects, including diversity of thinking. We particularly welcome applications from Black, Asian and those of Other Ethnicities, LGBT+, disabled and neurodiverse communities to make a real difference to our residents so that equalities and justice remains at the heart of everything we do. Click Diversity and Inclusion for more information on our commitment.

Agile working

At Camden we view work as an activity, not a place. We focus on performance, not presenteeism. We create trusting relationships, we embrace innovation rather than bureaucracy and we value people. Collaboration is the Camden way, silo working isn’t.

At Camden we are proud to be one of Hire Me My Way’s inaugural campaign supporters. Hire Me My Way is a national campaign led by Timewise, designed to increase the volume of good quality jobs that can be worked flexibly in the UK (www.HireMeMyWay.org.uk). Hire Me My Way aims to treble the number of available good quality flexible jobs to 1 million by 2020.

Asking for Adjustments

Camden is committed to making our recruitment practices barrier-free and as accessible as possible for everyone. This includes making adjustments or changes for disabled people, neurodiverse people or people with long-term health conditions. If you would like us to do anything differently during the application, interview or assessment process, including providing information in an alternative format, please contact us on 020 7974 6655, at resourcing@camden.gov.uk or post to 5 Pancras Square, London, N1C 4AG.
